Founded in Durban in September 2016 by Nasiphi Zwane, Sludge Underground was born out of a need to give a voice to local alternative bands that weren’t finding space on mainstream radio in the 031. What started as a grassroots platform quickly grew into a movement dedicated to amplifying the underground.

Soon after, Marcel joined the platform, bringing his passion for the Johannesburg alt scene and expanding Sludge’s reach beyond Durban, making Sludge Underground a bridge between cities and scenes.

In 2020, Meagan King came on board, with the world in lockdown resulting in Sludge Underground embracing online interviews, opening doors to conversations with creatives across South Africa and beyond. This shift not only broadened the platform’s scope but also cemented its reputation as a space where diverse voices and stories collide.

At its core, Sludge Underground thrives on a raw, conversational approach, unfiltered, authentic, and deeply human. Combined with the wide range of guests who have graced the platform, this style ensures that Sludge Underground continues to live up to its slogan:

Nasiphi founded Sludge Underground in Durban in 2016, establishing its vision, identity, and structure. As the driving force behind the platform, he oversees creative direction, and finances while remaining hands-on in shooting, editing, and content creation, ensuring Sludge Underground stays true to its mission of amplifying alternative voices.

Marcel Smuts

Producer & Lead Presenter

Marcel joined Sludge Underground in 2016, bringing his insight into Johannesburg’s alternative scene. As Lead Presenter, he anchors flagship content like Sludge Quickies, connecting audiences with the raw energy of underground creatives and the scene in general. In his role as Producer, Marcel records and edits, ensuring each release captures the authentic, alternative spirit that defines Sludge Underground.

Meagan King

Strategy & Operations Director

Meagan joined in 2020, amidst the pandemic. She oversees strategy, evaluates opportunities, and structures annual schedules to keep the platform sustainable and profitable. Her leadership ensures Sludge Underground balances creative freedom with operational excellence, making her the backbone of its long-term growth.
